The right to operate with independence

Ombudsmen across Australasia and the Pacific gathered last month at Te Whanganui-a-Tara, where Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier co-hosted the Australasian and Pacific Ombudsman Region (APOR) conference and the annual Members’ meeting on 13 and 14 October 2022.

The theme was ‘Remaining relevant and getting Government to listen’.

The two-day conference featured renowned panellists from various Australasian and Pacific Ombudsmen, with a keynote speech by former Ombudsman Sir Anand Satyanand, the Ombudsman-themed panel discussions covered three pertinent topics:

  • Staying independent and neutral while seeking advice from civil society and others.
  • Investigating Corruption: A job for a watchdog pack or lone wolf?
  • Influencing an integrity and human rights agenda.

Towards the end, the APOR Members adopted a Communiqué to celebrate the occasion of 60th Anniversary the New Zealand Office of the Ombudsman and to reflect the spirit of the conference discussions.
